Dark cherry and violets are the first flavours in a kaleidoscope of characters in this unique wine. This obscure variety piqued my interest after tasting the dense and intense wines of Madiran, France, the home of the Tannat variety.

This Hard Hill Road Tannat initially presents dark berry fruits, quickly followed by an array of unusual flavours such as floral elements, tar, gun smoke, earthy tones and even some kitchen spices. 

Although traditionally known for its big tannins, this Hard Hill Road Tannat is a restrained version. Presenting as a full-bodied rich wine, the fine, almost metallic tannins, paired with an intense fruit-bomb palate and persistent and cleansing finish, all come together to create an elegant wine.

This Tannat is made to drink with food and while it already presents a seamless balance of fruit depth and tannin, it will age beautifully for many years to come.
